Just a few hours after a disappointing debate performance, President Joe Biden addressed a crowd in Raleigh, affirming his commitment to leading the country for another term. Speaking at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, the 81-year-old Biden assured the audience of his confidence in his ability to serve as president.

“I wouldn’t be running again if I didn’t believe wholeheartedly that I can do this job,” Biden said.

Following the debate, some Democrats suggested Biden should consider stepping aside, with concerns about his capabilities heightened by his performance against former President Donald Trump. Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020, delivered a stronger showing in Raleigh, where he focused much of his speech on criticizing Trump.

“He set a new record for lies told in a single debate,” Biden remarked, referring to Trump. He also called Trump, who faces numerous legal challenges, a “one-man crime wave” with “no respect for women or the law.”

Biden briefly acknowledged his own debate performance, humorously noting his age. During the debate, some of Biden’s responses were disjointed.

“I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t speak as fluidly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know how to tell the truth,” Biden said.

Republicans seized on Biden’s debate performance to argue that he is unfit for another term. North Carolina Republican Party chairman Justin Simmons stated on social media that the debate showed Biden is not capable of being president.

Biden’s visit highlighted the importance of North Carolina to his reelection campaign. Governor Roy Cooper emphasized the state’s significance, suggesting that if Biden wins North Carolina, he will secure another term. Cooper hinted at a possible role in Biden’s administration if he wins, as Cooper is not seeking reelection due to term limits.

Historically, North Carolina has been a challenging state for Democratic presidential candidates. Biden’s campaign has invested heavily in the state, opening multiple field offices and increasing staff, while Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made several visits.

The Biden campaign aims to energize key Democratic groups, such as younger voters and minorities, with issues like abortion access and Trump’s character taking center stage. Republican strategist Jonathan Felts pointed out that cost-of-living issues are challenging Democrats, especially among rural voters and retirees.

In summary, despite a shaky debate performance and calls for him to step aside, Biden remains determined to lead the country for another term. His campaign is heavily focused on North Carolina, aiming to overcome historical challenges and energize key voter groups.
