The American Automobile Association, also known as AAA (said like Triple A) issued a warning to its drivers in North Carolina regarding road safety. The warning included general road safety tips as well as specific mentions of how to stay safe as the back-to-school season is upon us. Most North Carolina schools are heading back to campus this week and next week, meaning traffic flow is going to go through a massive change, just as it does every back-to-school season. AAA conducted a recent survey of North Carolina residents and based on the response that they received felt it was a good time to issue reminders to North Carolinians about how to navigate the roads around schools.

AAA reported that 60% of North Carolina drivers go through a school zone during their day.

Even though school zones are active for a more of the year than they are not, drivers and others on the road forget how to go through them safely. That is why after hearing the response back that a majority of people go through school zones, AAA issued their notice of a safety warning. Their safety warnings had specifications for the average car driver, pedestrians, bicyclists, and those in or around bus stops.

For pedestrians, AAA had a few pieces of advice.

During the school year, in the mornings and afternoons school zones are flooded by pedestrians of students, staff, and family members walking to and from school. AAA advised that the pedestrians use sidewalks anytime they are available. Some kids may want to be silly and have fun by walking in the street, but this can be extremely dangerous and risky. If there is no sidewalk, instead walk against the flow of traffic so you can see when vehicles are approaching. They also advised walkers to be visible and confirm their visibility. This could mean wearing bright colored clothing and making eye contact with the driver when having to cross the street to ensure they see you.

For bicyclists, AAA expanded on their tips for pedestrians.

Similarly, bicyclists are advised to wear bright colors to better the chances of being seen. This includes the bike helmet you wear, which you are always advised to wear. However, when it comes to biking AAA suggests using bike lanes whenever possible and going with the direction of vehicles if no bike lane is available. Bicyclists are also specifically advised not to wear headphones, something often done by kids heading to school, so that they can remain aware of their surroundings.

As general precautions to motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and those in and around bus stops, AAA warned to always stay aware of the road. Be attentive and present while staying cautious as you share the road/roadside areas with many. Additionally, they advised to stay vigilant and give plenty of space for others on the road with you, particularly buses.
